Every region has its tourist spots — the ones on every list, every travel blog, every "Top 10 Things to Do" article. Those are fine. But the places worth knowing about are the ones locals don't always talk about.

We're near the orchard a lot. Here's what we've found.

Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, Vernon

Kalamalka Lake is called the "Lake of a Thousand Colours" and it earns it. The turquoise and emerald hues shift with the light and the season in a way that genuinely doesn't look real. The provincial park has trails along the bluffs above the lake with views that stop you mid-step. It's not a secret exactly, but it's quieter than Okanagan Lake and the water is something else. If you're near the Vernon orchard, this is a 10-minute drive and a non-negotiable stop.

The BX Creek Trail, Vernon

We've talked about BX Falls before, but the full BX Creek trail system is worth exploring beyond just the falls. The creek runs through forested canyon land, past the Hardcore Cider orchard, and the trail network gives you options depending on how far you want to go. Early morning in summer, with the light coming through the trees and the creek running alongside you, it's one of the quieter, more grounding walks in the North Okanagan.

Ellison Provincial Park, Lake Country

BC's first freshwater marine park. Ellison sits on the western shore of Okanagan Lake between Vernon and Kelowna and has some of the best swimming and snorkelling in the interior. The underwater rock formations are genuinely worth seeing. It's a local favourite that doesn't always make the tourist lists, which means it stays manageable even in peak summer. Pack a cooler and plan to stay a while.

The Kelowna Farmers' & Crafters' Market

Saturday mornings at the Kelowna Farmers' Market are a ritual worth building your weekend around. Local produce, Okanagan honey, artisan cheese, fresh bread, charcuterie — everything you need to build a serious board. Get there early for the best selection.

Cosens Bay, Kalamalka Lake

A quieter beach on Kalamalka Lake that most visitors drive right past. The water is that impossible turquoise colour, the beach is pebbly and uncrowded, and the views across the lake toward the hills are exactly what the Okanagan is supposed to look like. Bring a paddleboard if you have one. Pack a cold Hardcore Cider regardless.

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail — Myra Canyon Access Points

Everyone knows Myra Canyon, but fewer people know the quieter access points along the KVR that give you the same trail experience without the crowds. The rail bed runs for kilometres through the hills above Kelowna and the views into the valley are consistently excellent. Pick a section, walk or ride it, and take your time. The Okanagan looks different from up there.

Davison Orchards, Vernon

A working orchard that's been in the same family for generations and does it right. In summer and fall, the farm stand is stocked with fresh-picked fruit, apple cider (the non-alcoholic kind), and baked goods that are worth the drive on their own. It's the kind of place that reminds you why the Okanagan is the Okanagan. Worth a stop any time you're in Vernon.

The best spots are the ones you find by slowing down and looking around. The Okanagan rewards that every time.
