That means building soil health, supporting biodiversity, and managing our orchards with regenerative practices that improve the land over time rather than depleting it. Here's how we approach long-term sustainability in our Okanagan orchards.

What Is Regenerative Agriculture?

Regenerative agriculture goes beyond sustainability. Sustainability means maintaining the status quo—not making things worse. Regenerative agriculture means actively improving the ecosystem: building soil organic matter, increasing biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and creating resilient, self-supporting systems that get better with time.

In orchards, this means:

  • Building soil health through organic matter and microbial activity
  • Using cover crops to prevent erosion, fix nitrogen, and support beneficial insects
  • Minimizing tillage to preserve soil structure and carbon
  • Encouraging biodiversity—pollinators, beneficial insects, and soil organisms
  • Reducing synthetic inputs by working with natural systems

It's farming with the land, not against it. And it's the only way to ensure our orchards remain productive, healthy, and resilient for generations.

Soil Health: The Foundation of Everything

Healthy soil is living soil. It's not just dirt—it's a complex ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and microorganisms that break down organic matter, cycle nutrients, and support plant health. Without healthy soil, you can't grow healthy apples. Period.

How We Build Soil Health:

1. Organic Matter Addition
We return organic matter to the soil through composting, mulching, and leaving pruned material to decompose in place. Organic matter feeds soil microbes, improves water retention, and builds the spongy, fertile soil structure that apple trees thrive in.

2. Minimal Tillage
Tilling destroys soil structure, kills beneficial organisms, and releases stored carbon into the atmosphere. We minimize tillage in our orchards, preserving the underground network of fungal hyphae (mycorrhizae) that help trees access water and nutrients.

3. Soil Testing & Monitoring
We regularly test soil for pH, nutrient levels, and organic matter content. This allows us to make informed decisions about amendments, irrigation, and cover crop selection—treating the soil as the living system it is, not just a growing medium.

4. Mycorrhizal Fungi Support
Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationships with apple tree roots, extending their reach and improving nutrient uptake. We protect and encourage these fungi by avoiding fungicides that harm beneficial organisms and by maintaining organic matter levels that support fungal growth.

Cover Crops: The Unsung Heroes of Orchard Health

Cover crops are plants grown between orchard rows—not for harvest, but to improve soil, prevent erosion, fix nitrogen, and support beneficial insects. They're one of the most powerful tools in regenerative orchard management.

Why We Use Cover Crops:

1. Prevent Erosion
The Okanagan Valley has steep slopes and intense summer heat. Bare soil erodes quickly during irrigation or rare rain events. Cover crops hold soil in place with their root systems, preventing erosion and nutrient loss.

2. Fix Nitrogen Naturally
Legume cover crops (clover, vetch, peas) have root nodules that host nitrogen-fixing bacteria. These bacteria pull nitrogen from the air and convert it into a form plants can use. When the cover crop is mowed or tilled in, that nitrogen becomes available to the apple trees—reducing or eliminating the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.

3. Improve Soil Structure
Cover crop roots break up compacted soil, create channels for water and air, and add organic matter when they decompose. Deep-rooted cover crops (like daikon radish) can penetrate hardpan layers, improving drainage and root penetration for apple trees.

4. Support Beneficial Insects & Pollinators
Flowering cover crops (clover, buckwheat, phacelia) provide nectar and habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects—ladybugs, lacewings, parasitic wasps—that control pests naturally. A diverse cover crop mix creates a living ecosystem that supports orchard health without chemical inputs.

5. Suppress Weeds
A thick cover crop outcompetes weeds, reducing the need for herbicides or mechanical weeding. It's a natural, low-input way to manage orchard floors.

Cover Crops We Use:

  • Clover: Nitrogen-fixing, pollinator-friendly, drought-tolerant
  • Vetch: Nitrogen-fixing, deep-rooted, excellent biomass
  • Buckwheat: Fast-growing, attracts beneficial insects, suppresses weeds

Water Management: Precision Irrigation in a Desert Climate

The Okanagan is a desert. Water is precious, and irrigation is essential. But over-irrigation wastes water, leaches nutrients, and stresses trees. Under-irrigation reduces fruit quality and yield.

We use drip irrigation and soil moisture monitoring to deliver water precisely when and where it's needed. This conserves water, reduces runoff, and ensures trees get consistent hydration without waste. It's precision agriculture applied to sustainability.

Biodiversity: Pollinators, Predators & Ecosystem Balance

Monocultures are fragile. A single pest or disease can devastate an entire orchard. Biodiversity creates resilience—multiple species, multiple interactions, and natural checks and balances that reduce reliance on chemical inputs.

How We Support Biodiversity:

Mason Bee Homes: We install mason bee cocoons and nesting homes throughout our orchards to ensure reliable pollination without relying solely on managed honeybee hives.

Hedgerows & Native Plants: We plant native shrubs and wildflowers along orchard edges to provide habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and pollinators.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM): We monitor pest populations and use biological controls (beneficial insects, pheromone traps) before resorting to chemical interventions. The goal is balance, not eradication.

Carbon Sequestration: Orchards as Carbon Sinks

Healthy soil sequesters carbon. As organic matter builds and soil microbes thrive, carbon is pulled from the atmosphere and stored underground. Perennial crops like apple trees also store carbon in their wood and root systems.

By building soil health, minimizing tillage, and using cover crops, our orchards actively remove carbon from the atmosphere—making cider production not just sustainable, but regenerative.
